I’ve always felt the paper was a waste, but after seeing these hard hitting headlines from the local Sunday paper Im rethinking my position. How could I NOT want these valuable stories!

Everyone knows this

Why am I surprised that the massive (almost shadow to anyone outside SLC) industry that is Deseret also has a newspaper?

I think you would find this youtube series entertaining.

I’m starting you with number 2 because the first one had a silly format and isn’t as good as the rest of them. Also, Poo joke.

As it has always been. The Desperate News has been the butt of jokes in the area for decades.

Its not THAT big an organization

http://deseretmanagement.com/our-companies/

Bonneville international is about the biggest chunk of that in terms of reach, and even then its just one network affiliate TV station and a handful of radio stations.

Deseret is just the name Mormons love to slap on their companies, as well as Legacy and Zion. They’re not all related necessarily.

They are not all as unified as you might think. The name “Deseret” is generic, but most places with it in the name are somehow owned by the LDS church directly or a holding company owned by the LDS church. The newspaper is simply a subsidiary of one of the holding companies... Chances are you have or had a radio station in your metro area that they own(ed), particularly if you live in a major metro in the western US.

Surprised that crosswalk sting hasn’t been covered nationally...

Yeah, all of these just generally imply it’s owned by a Mormon, but it doesn’t guarantee it’s owned by the LDS church. Major organizations with names that are related to the area are generally owned by them, but there are definitely exceptions...

I wonder if that’s from the same author as the article about the pizza on KSL? It’s the same misleading title. The general public is going to assume officer means POLICE officer, not a parking enforcement officer.

That makes sense lol. Last time I was in SLC, “Deseret” was everywhere and my only thought was “damn, this Deseret company basically does everything!”

With all the BS politics and horrible stuff in the news I sorta love local puff pieces.

The local police blotter at the vacation spot in VT has articles on rescuing cats in trees and returning lost purses. Sometimes no news is good news.

It’s some weird made up word that means “industry”, “industrious”, or something like that from the BoM. When I moved there I thought it was a misspelling of “desert” from the distant past (because these things get enshrined), but it wasn’t.

There are a lot of weird things about Mormons you probably don’t know. They’re stereotypes as “conservatives”, but that’s only from a social perspective and only in some regards. The church itself is one of the largest effectively communist groups I’ve ever seen and all early outposts operated like communes. They’re fascinating, to be honest.
